Engagement letters & fee agreements
Scope of work, retainer amount, milestones, and cancellation terms, signed before work begins.
Solution by industry, law firms & legal practices
Close engagements with your client the same day, without waiting on the mail. A cryptographic audit trail with evidentiary value, ID verification with a driver's license or passport, and a public verifier with no login required. Built under the ESIGN Act and UETA, with U.S. business-hours support.
What changes for your firm
A client in another city, or another state entirely. Today that means overnight mail, a scanned signature page, or an in-person meeting that keeps getting pushed back.
If an engagement or a settlement is ever disputed, the audit trail has to show who signed, when, from where, and with what hash — the standard is Federal Rule of Evidence 901, not a screenshot of an email.
For sensitive engagements, clicking a button in an email isn't enough. You need a government-issued ID, a biometric match, and a liveness check on file.
Every follow-up email and every check-in call about an unsigned document is time you're not billing a client for. A slow signing process costs real money, not just patience.
Document types
Private agreements between businesses and individuals, signed under the ESIGN Act and UETA. Your firm drafts each document with its own clauses; Kligrafia handles the signature, identity verification, and the audit trail. The legal content of the document remains the responsibility of the firm that drafts it.
Scope of work, retainer amount, milestones, and cancellation terms, signed before work begins.
Signed before you share sensitive information with a prospective client or opposing counsel.
Close out a dispute with a cryptographic audit trail on file in case a party challenges it later.
A clean, signed record when a client agrees to repay fees or a settlement amount over time.
Short documents that need a fast signature from the client — receive the email, sign, done.
Fee-sharing and referral terms between attorneys, signed without a single in-person meeting.
Differentiators for law firms
The /us/legal/electronic-signature-legality page walks through how each legal requirement is met, point by point — useful to show a client or opposing counsel why the signature is valid.
Level A is a one-time email code, Level B adds a government-issued ID with OCR and a face match, Level C adds a liveness video with randomized prompts. You choose the level per document, based on risk.
Every completed document generates an evidence report with a SHA-256 hash before and after signing, a timestamp for every action, IP, user-agent, device, approximate location, and the KYC level reached. Reproducible if the agreement ends up in a dispute.
A counterparty, an expert witness, or a judge opens kligrafia.com/verify, enters the document identifier, and sees the complete audit trail. No account and no dependency on your firm.
Teams plan from 3 seats: each attorney with their own login, shared templates, an organization-wide audit log, and your firm's branding (logo and colors) on emails and the evidence report. REST API and webhooks to integrate with your practice management software.
One flat monthly subscription, billed automatically. Upgrade, downgrade, or cancel anytime — no annual contract required.
Recommended plan for law firms
For a solo attorney
An independent practice or a single-attorney office.
For firms
A firm with 3 or more attorneys, shared templates, your own branding, and API access.
How it works
30 seconds
Drag in the agreement your firm drafted. Mark where each party signs and where dates, initials, or extra fields go.
1 minute
Decide who signs and in what order. Choose the identity verification level based on the risk of the document. Kligrafia sends the email or SMS with a unique link.
ESIGN Act & UETA valid
Once everyone signs, you get the sealed PDF and the audit report — hashes, IPs, timestamps, devices, and the KYC level reached. Anyone can verify it without an account.
Yes, in every state. The ESIGN Act (15 U.S.C. §7001) gives electronic signatures the same legal effect as a handwritten one, and UETA — adopted by 49 states, with New York using its own equivalent statute, ESRA — reinforces that at the state level, as long as the signer's identity and the document's integrity can be established. Kligrafia is built to satisfy both with ID verification and a hash-chained audit trail.
The ESIGN Act carves out specific categories: wills, codicils, and testamentary trusts; family law matters like adoption and divorce; court orders and pleadings that must follow court rules; and certain notices (eviction, utility cancellation, insurance cancellation, product recalls). For everything else — engagement letters, NDAs, settlements, most contracts between private parties — an electronic signature is valid. Kligrafia is not a notary and does not perform Remote Online Notarization (RON); documents that require notarization or recording still need a commissioned notary.
Anyone opens kligrafia.com/verify, enters the document identifier, or scans the QR code on the signed PDF. No login, no account. The verifier shows the complete chain of events, the hash-chained cryptographic record, and the identity level each signer completed. If the document was altered after signing, the verifier flags it.
Level A (a one-time email code) fits low-risk agreements between parties who already know each other, like an internal NDA. Level B (a government-issued ID — driver's license or passport — with OCR and a face match against a selfie) fits engagement letters, settlements, and most client-facing contracts. Level C (Level B plus a short liveness video with randomized prompts) fits high-value or high-dispute-risk engagements. You choose the level per document, based on risk.
The Pro plan at $9/month signs from a single user — a solo practice or an individual attorney. For firms with more than one attorney, the Teams plan starts at 3 seats at $8/seat/month ($24 minimum). Each attorney gets their own login, templates are shared across the organization, and the audit log is accessible to administrators. REST API and webhooks are included with Teams.
Yes. Data is encrypted with AES-256-GCM at the organization level, with a per-organization key derived via HKDF. PostgreSQL enforces row-level security, so no other organization can access your templates or documents — isolation is enforced at the database engine level, not just the application layer.
Kligrafia is a tool your firm uses internally. What you charge a client for drafting and executing an agreement is part of your fees — the client doesn't see Kligrafia as a separate line item. They receive the email from your Pro or Teams account, sign from their phone, and it's on record. On the Teams plan, the evidence report the client downloads carries your firm's logo and name.
Yes, on the Teams and Enterprise plans. The REST API with an OpenAPI 3.1 spec lets you create documents, add signers, download signed PDFs, and check status from any system. Webhooks signed with HMAC-SHA256 notify you of events in real time: sent, viewed, signed, completed. Compatible with any practice management system or CRM that accepts HTTP calls.
Create your free account, upload an agreement, set up your signers, and close the loop in under 5 minutes. The Free plan includes 3 documents a month, no card required.
